ElectroRoute sponsors Engineering Education Scheme Success at King’s High Warwick



ElectroRoute’s partnership with King’s High School in Warwick has seen four Year 12 students complete the nationally recognised Engineering Education Scheme (EES)[1]. The students were set a very ambitious project target; design and demonstrate a sustainable social housing scheme that could be maintained with no net cost of energy to its residents.

The four students worked closely with ElectroRoute’s Dr. Tim Foster, Head of UK Services, and managed to design and test an approach that met 90% of the building’s energy needs within the cost specification. They achieved this by using a combination of established and innovative approaches to energy generation and storage; including, roof top solar panels, mini hydroelectric generators in water and drainage pipes and electromagnetic generators in waste chutes and lift shafts. Space heating and hot water were provided from an innovative CHP (Combined Heat and Power)[2] system that utilised the refuse produced by the residents. The use of batteries to store electricity and electric pool cars, that could be used by the residents, offered further opportunities to smooth out the energy use profile and make use of surplus electricity generated by the building.

The culmination of the Engineering Education Scheme was a Celebration Event in Solihull, where the students presented their project to a panel of industry experts, local dignitaries and their peers, providing further insight into their project and answering questions raised.

King’s High Headmaster Richard Nicholson commented “Opportunities like the EES project are very important to encourage girls to consider a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We know that there are far too few girls and women in science-related careers and I am grateful to the team at ElectroRoute for developing a project that allowed young women to develop and apply skills to current real-world engineering and environmental challenges”

[1] The Engineering Education Scheme (EES) is a six-month programme that links teams of Year 12 students and their teachers with local companies, where they work on real Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) projects. The scheme provides students with an in-depth experience in Engineering and Technology, to enable them to make an informed decision about their future studies and career.

[2] Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is the simultaneous generation of useable heat and electricity in a single process and is regarded as a highly efficient energy production process.
